Subitising

Activity Number
The term "number sense" is a relatively new one in mathematics education.

How does number sense begin?

An intuitive sense of number begins at a very early age.
Subitising is recognising a collection (of objects, pictures, dots on dominoes etc) without counting, simply by looking.
Piaget called this ability to instantaneously recognise the number of objects in a small group 'subitising'.

Subitising is a skill that develops before counting. Children learn to ‘see how many at a glance’ through games and activities.
For more info on subitising go to Things I Wish I Knew Earlier about Teaching Maths or What is Number Sense? and scroll down.
